This article tells you how to switch your existing domain from another email provider to ChangeIP.com.
- If you have not already, order our Email Hosting package for your domain
- If you are unfamiliar with DNS Manager, watch our brief tutorial on how to use it
- Once you are familiar with how DNS Manager works, edit the domain you wish to change (using DNS Manager)
- Add MX records for ChangeIP.com:
- Open DNS Manager
- Select the domain you wish to switch mail to ChangeIP.com
- Click 'Add Record' (at the bottom-left of the page), then 'Record Type': MX
- Hostname: @
- Value: mx1.changeip.com.
- Notice the trailing '.' on the above Value
- TTL: whatever you choose (at least 30)
- Priority: 10
- Click 'Add Record' again, 'Record Type': MX
- Hostname: @
- Value: mx2.changeip.com.
- Notice the trailing '.' on the above Value
- TTL: whatever you choose (at least 30)
- Priority: 20
- Click 'Save' at the bottom-left
- At this point, we would recommend you edit your old MX records (if they exist) and set them at a lower preference (heavier priority value). This will ensure there are no gaps between the old records being removed and the new records propagating.
- NOTE: This section is not required, only a recommendation. This particular process can happen however you see fit for your needs. If you do not wish to have a transition period, please skip to the next section.
- While in DNS Manager for this domain, click each of the old MX records (non-changeip.com records)
- Set the priority to something higher than the ChangeIP.com records, something like (50, 55, 60, etc)
- Click 'Save' at the bottom-left.
- Once the records have propagated (you can see the new values in your own DNS queries), you can move on to the delete section below.
- After adding the ChangeIP.com MX records, you will need to remove any MX records that point to servers other than ChangeIP.com's MX servers (mx1.changeip.com, mx2.changeip.com)
- NOTE: This process is irreversible, be sure you are certain that the correct records you want to delete are selected
- While in DNS Manager for this domain, click on the Non-ChangeIP.com MX record you wish to delete
- Select the 'delete' checkbox on the far right
- Click on any additional Non-ChangeIP.com MX records you wish to delete
- Select the 'delete' checkbox next to them
- Click 'Save' at the bottom-left
- NOTE: Propagation times may vary depending on various DNS caching settings (which can often ignore TTL's). Please allow time for these records to propagate.
